Yes, they do say to themselves "but look at the time frame". They are not idiots. That being said, developers in particular are not just about profits, like it or not. Publishers might fit that frame better, but a fact of life is that ALL businesses are run by people who have personal preferences that affect their decision making. Nothing is 100% about maximizing profits, save for some automated currency/stock exchange systems.
