Thats fine, but to admit the popularity level was on par is utterly ludicrous. Metal Gear had the chance to be as big as it was because Kojima switched to CD's instead of using cartridges just like Final Fantasy did. Thats why companies switched to Sony. Less stringent, larger base and in the beginning actually invested into formats if they were partners.

And it was just established earlier that, had Sony not been in the picture, Nintendo would have had a CD-based console and not have any legal issues.

Thats why they contacted Sony though, right? Panasonic was no Sony. Sony had influence over the masses when it came to tech. What Samsung is today, they were in the 90's. Nintendo did not agree with the terms of the contract so they walked out on Sony. In a way Sony should thank Nintendo for walking out on them because their revenge brought them to a better place where they could find stability once everything else fell down around them. Sony's biggest influence upon gaming was using their influence increase media in more peoples homes. Without Sony the industry wouldn't have had that type of influence. I know for sure Microsofts influence wouldn't have been format based and Nintendo is dependent upon third party. 3DO was a group effort to enter the gaming realm by Tripp Hawkins with the likes of LG and Panasonic partnering with them and look how that turned out?

Sony dominates because they tend to do the right thing at the right time and they capitalize on opportunities. While they haven;t brought anything particularly new to the table with the PS4, people trust them after regaining their trust. Nintendo has show that they do not care about the mass market (who at large want third party). Sony or Microsoft might not have the loyal following Nintendo has when you take away the third party but at the heart of it all they've shown what it takes to survive and dominate in this industry and making it a group effort is key between first party, second party and third party. No one person is  weak link if they all act together as one strong unit and thats what makes the Playstation or even the Xbox One more attractive than the Wii U.

If Nintendo got rid of their isolationist issues the gaming industry probably would be better off as well as their own gamers who I hate to say it, but blindly sing their praises even when they are wrong.
