The PS3 was clearly the anomaly considering the fact that the PS4 is tracking ahead of both of them (your point is already invalid). Sony didn't ship an unusually large amount of hardware annually with the PS2, it's just that the PS2 and PS3 co-existed for many years due to the incredible blunders they made with the PS3. This artificially extended the PS2's lifespan while eating into the potential sales for the PS3. Taken as one continuous system the Playstation consoles have never had a period that even came close to being as anomalous as the Wii was for Nintendo.

If you think the wii is an anommaly , you are forced to accept the ps2 as an anomally too. there's no middle ground. Who cares about ps4 tracking? it won't even scratch ps2 numbers and might not even reach ps3 numbers. And don't come with excuses, ps2 post 2006 sales came mostly from developing countries, it didn't eat into potential ps3 buyers.

I don't even know where to begin with this wall of utter nonsense. You don't make even a shred of sense, what is wrong with you?

Year PS1 PS2 PS3 PS4
Launch 4.30 1.41 3.61 6.23 ~
2nd Fiscal Year 9.20 9.20 9.24 14.11 ~
3rd Fiscal Year 19.37 18.07 10.06
4th Fiscal Year 21.60 22.52 13.00
5th Fiscal Year 18.50 20.10 14.30
6th Fiscal Year 9.31 * 16.17 13.90
7th Fiscal Year 7.40 16.22 11.42 ~
8th Fiscal Year 6.78 14.20 * 6.90 * ~
9th Fiscal Year 3.31 13.70 3.66 ~
10th Fiscal Year 2.77 7.90
11th Fiscal Year   7.30
12th Fiscal Year   6.40
13th Fiscal Year   2.30 ~

* -  denotes year of successor's launch
~ - denotes estimates using VGChartz Data (Sony ceased releasing detailed hardware shipment data three years ago)

The anomaly that explains the PS2's unusally healthy twilight years and the PS4's explosive launch is bolded and underlined in case you missed it. The PS3 was a poorly developed, grossly overpriced nightmare that contributed to the increased success of both the PS2 and PS4. The PS2 launched at the end of the PS1's sixth fiscal year so it ate into the original's sales. The PS3 did not launch until the PS2's eighth fiscal year and the vacuum left by it contributed to the PS2's success. If you're going to spend your time on a forum dedicated to video game sales you might want to learn a bit more about them.

Your whole statement about how the PS2 has to be an anomaly in the exact same sense as the Wii and that there is no middle ground is complete and utter nonsense. Additionally, your statement dismissing the PS4's current sales trends is laughable. Without analyzing past sales trends how are we to determine future trends, are we supposed to just make them up like you do?

Your assertion that the PS4 might not reach the PS3's sales total is assinine and groundless, it will obviously surpass its successor (and by a fairly healthy amount at that). Over the course of the next three fiscal years the PS4 will likely sell approximately 60 million units globally and that alone will put it within striking distance of the PS3.

Finally, claiming that the discrepancy between the PS1's and PS2's LTD hardware totals can be explained by developing nations is verifiably false. The PS2 outsold the PS1 by over 53 million units but the "Rest of World" only accounted for a bit over 16 million of those. Learn to read and interpret data properly son.
