I don't think knocking £50 or $50 off the price will make much difference apart from a sharp spike in sales that may last a few weeks at best.

If that were true, many electronics would sell in the billions. people can't afford everything, so of course price affects sales.

I don't buy that.  The Wii U has been out well over 2 years.  a £50 or $50 price drop will have a short term effect on sales like I said.  But lets not kid ourselves.  If someone wanted a Wii U, and hadn't saved up enough to buy one in the 2+ years it's been out then they are likely never going to get one.  

Just look at the Xbox and PS4.  Prime examples of machines in demand, selling, no matter the cost.
