Well for starters, we don't know if the lack of custom matches mean we can't choose what stage or game mode (Turf/Splatzone) to play. And if these are still the only customizable features in the lastest demo that IGN played with, then this could be what they're referring to.

If IGN was able to try out some cool new things that could be customizable but could not talk about it, I'm going to trust their judgment that the lack of customizing that is a negative as well. This could be possible too since they only gave one sentence about the lack of private custom matches with friends.

Edit: And this is assuming that IGN isn't stupid for thinking the lack of limiting players' weapons mean a lack of customization.
