If you look at it just with what the 360 did tho not in a race scenario it did go from the first Xbox system which sold just 24million units and created a system which sold 84m+ systems, 3x as popular as its predecessor, X360 may have finished last in its "race" but it was a great success in what it achieved.

You're right, nearly flipped in 6th generation and hitting 84+ million the next is impressive. And it had its influence on the market by showing what online can do for you.
