I think a handheld can get away with being $250 as long as it has an excellent launch lineup and a strong post-launch release schedule. Something 3DS did not have.

It can get away with it, sure, but it would have to be one fricking amazing handheld to get me to spend that much for the hardware alone.

Ya i agree it would have to be pretty amazing. Here is much what the 3DS first year, Nintendo-published lineup looked like

March 2011-Nintendogs+Cats, Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver

June 2011-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

September 2011-Star Fox 64 3D

October 2011-Pokemon Rumble Blast

November 2011-Super Mario 3D Land

December 2011-Mario Kart 7

March 2012-Kid Icarus: Uprising

There was just too big of a gap between releases for the first 6 months. Had they delayed it 6 months and the lineup looked more like this than I believe 3DS would have done alright at $250.

August 2011-Nintendogs+Cats, Ocarina of Time 3D, Pilotwings Resort

September 2011-Star Fox 64 3D, Steel Diver

October 2011-Pokemon Rumble Blast

November 2011-Super Mario 3D Land

February 2012-Mario Kart 7

March 2012-Kid Icarus: Uprising

May 2012-Mario Tennis Open

August 2012-price cut to $199.99, 3DS XL launch-$249.99, New Super Mario Bros. 2

If that's how the 3DS first year played out than I believe the price wouldn't have been as big of a factor for many people.
