My guess. The cost of the PS3. Plus, the size of the PS3. This started to cause a trend in not wanting to bother. Also, The kids that were apart of the 90's generation. Transistioned to College/work. And that was the majority. That void opened up. And less kids now want a console. They're happy to have a cell only. And don't care about anything else. A cell would be to a gamer the holy grail, to them. Why would they look at anything else? Remember, it's easy to ignore things. And you'll never care that you're missing out on something that you might like.
