Is episode vii a canonical successor, meaning those who read books and comics already know what will happen? |
Yes Episode VII is a canonical successor! However with that in mind Disney has scrapped the whole EU stuff for a freash start and more "creative control". Anything after Return of the Jedi is no longer cannon unfortunately. Thrawn Trilogy and Legacy of the Force are gone now. That being said there are elements from some of the EU content that will influence the films. J J. Abrams knows what he is doing. He has a been a huge Star Wars nerd since he was little boy! So I trust that he gets this one right. For him, this is like if you were given a change to work on your favorite IP! Abrams dream has come true.
There is a HUGE rumor that Mara Jade will make an appearance in the film. This is a huge rumor that has some evidence backing it up due to the Star Wars Rebels toy lineup. This should be taken with a grain of salt.
