I think one thing that helped their HD transition a lot is that they resisted the urge to limit or mute their color palette.  A lot of devs did this when making the transition, with the purpose being iirc to compensate for deficiencies in their engines, specifically lighting.  However, I think keeping their color palette wide has helped Nintendo's visuals stay solid even during early struggles.
