My first love, however, will always be Star Wars. I watched the original trilogy religiously as a kid and read every bit of fiction I could get my hands on. Lately, though, I've been drifting away. The prequels were alienating. And now, with Disney and Abrams at the helm, I think I've given up. The one bright spot is the return of Hamill, Fisher, and Ford to the big screen. Star Trek, objectively, is probably the best of the bunch. So many great episodes, so many good movies. Sure there are a lot of duds in the mix, but that's to be expected from a franchise spanning almost 50 years. Things have taken a downward turn since Enterprise and Nemesis, unfortunately, and I fear the series will never return to its contemplative, humanistic roots now that it's been transformed into a slick action series by Abrams and company. |
I don't know if it can really be calld underappreciated for a sci fi show the first series ran 10 seasons. I think it's only really passed by Doctor Who and Smallville.
Atlatis could have had a few more seasons easily and Univers really was only getting started, it really is a large sci fi empire of a series.
I too loved star wars first. I got into the comics and the books. Though from the prequels on it was losing more and more of what I loved. Eventually in the books they killed Chewie saving Anakin Solo and then they killed Anakin. After that I was done. Now will all the books not being cannon they got rid of all the crap but they also got rid of my favorite parts at the same time. Anakin Solo no longers dies because he no longer lives. Yet the prequels remain cannon. So no thanks for the most part.
Star Trek is vast. Almost too vast at times. With all the movies shows and books it's bursting full of contradictions, yet it laid the foundation for so much of the sci fi that has followed. I loved some of the shows with DS9 being my favorite, I was always disapointed it never got any movies unlike both series that predated it.
