At this point it should be apparent that Nintendo has no plans to cancel the F-Zero franchise. Nintendo Land, the ambassador program and now two Mario Kart DLCs; Nintendo promotes the series every chance they get.
A new entry may not arrive on Wii U due to limited sales potential, but they obviously have something cooked up. What we see today is their way of keeping old F-Zero fans patient, while raising interest among other Nintendo fans who are unfamiliar with the series.
If they are successful, we may be looking at another Fire Emblem-esque resurgence in the making.
