I think they are sorely lacking a flagship IP for older consumers. They have Mario, Pokemon, etc. which more than fills the family demographic.

Metroid, Xenoblade, Bayonetta are far too niche to give them a credible presence with older players.

And given Nintendo's poor marketing, I don't think their odds of successfully launching a new character IP on their own (ala a Destiny) is all that great either.

I'd suggest securing movie deals. Nintendo used that gambit in the 90s fairly successfully with Star Wars and James Bond so why not try it again.

The Avengers
The Fast & Furious
James Bond

Are all available open IP as far as I can tell. Spend a few bucks. Bond would be IMO the ideal get. Avengers appeals to kids and adults fairly evenly so there would be appeal there too.

They could setup a deal whereby they make the Nintendo platform + iOS + Android versions of games and maybe farm out development of other platforms (Sony/MS) to a close partner like DeNA or Tecmo-Koei or Bandai-Namco with the understanding that those versions are "different" (read: so like Bond FPS' are only for Nintendo platforms).

Throwing some could cash to get exclusive rights to the movie IPs in questin is not impossible and could work well.  Licenced IPs have gone exclusive in the past, it just has to make sense to the property owner.  Avengers exclusive on the Nintendo NX platforms could be big.

I also don't think it's out of the question to develop a new adult IP.  I think they would be better off hiring or buying an outside studio to do it, however.  Destiny is a great example, Titanfall a good but less successful example.  Nintendo needed a new IP to go with Wii U to show they were doing something different and trying to re-focus on core gamers.  Something like those title would have worked magic (ignoring the flaws with the Wii U hardware concept).  If Wii U was launched with Destiny and an upgraded/delayed Last Story, it would have looked like a very different system.  Mistwalker should be making RPG's for Nintendo on years Monolithsoft doesn't, and there should be a AAA western studio making something fresh like Destiny.
