This is easy to answer. The DS had the capability to expand developer's minds with how to implement gameplay with two screens, or one screen with touch mechanics, or just other games that didn't use either. Not to mention the much bigger library the DS had, they were simply able to connect to a bigger base from kids to adults, was affordable, and had tons of third-party development along with the AAA software that Nintendo usually creates..
