Did any third party ask for the touchpad on the DualShock 4?

Bethesda never made a good game for a Nintendo platform, so they shouldn't expect to be treated like a major force. Besides, it's not like Bethesda's wishes really differ from those of EA and Warner Bros. who were on stage.

But really, it doesn't need to matter to me what you and others want to believe. If you want to believe that it's always all Nintendo's fault, that's fine. Because Nintendo has already decided that they aren't going to try another time only to get abandoned right away again; and that's the correct decision.

If you really think the touchpad on DS4 and the screen on the gamepad are on the same level in terms of manufacturing costs and functionality then I really don't know what to say.

As for your last comment, it really doesn't matter to me what you or others want to believe. If you want to believe it's always 3rd party's fault, that's fine. Because 3rd parties have already decided that they aren't going to try to support Nintendo consoles when Nintendo doesn't bother asking them about what they want. And that's the correct decision.

I agree with your @bolded point, but that just reinforces that, ultimately, Rol is correct.

It is absolutely in 3rd parties' best interest to stick with Sony and Microsoft, as that is where the sales/money are for them.  And it is in Sony and Microsoft's best interest to cater to them for the same reasons.  Therefore, why would it make sense for Nintendo to bend over backwards to try and appease them when it will net them minimal results at best?  However, Nintendo doing their own thing can still sometimes be beneficial to them - the Wii is the perfect example of Nintendo pioneering their own path, and yet games like Guitar Hero and Just Dance proved to be enormously successful on the console for Activision and Ubisoft, respectively.

On the other hand, WiiU was a total mess; give the controller full "dual shock" functionality with a gimmick slapped on, try to bring in 3rd parties by having last gen ports while futilely throwing "Wii" branded games at it as a last resort, etc.

While, in theory, a Nintendo system with absolute 3rd party parity would be unstoppable, a Ninty console is simply not going to be the place that people go to for Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto as long as Sony and Microsoft are still around and doing what they do as well as they do.  Hence, why it is in Ninty's best interest to do their own thing.  They just need to avoid the identity crisis result that is the WiiU, which is the absolute worst path to take, and I think we can all agree on that.
