Releasing in the holidays would've lead to increased competition with other titles (even a better, more desirable Mario game: Mario Maker) so I don't think that would've gone over well. They released it at the right time imo, during the spring with little competition and with a new amiibo line. It should have legs for a long time, especially during the holiday period.
