Do Microsoft and Nintendo only care for the holiday period?

Nintendo is more like a second half of the year company. That's when we see the most releases. (Last year, MK8/DK released pretty close to 2nd half) and then we had Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros and Captain Toad.
