It didn't sell that poorly. For a new IP that was seen as a very niche game it sold about what I expected.
It just got a shit ton of hype on gaming sites and so people expected way more sales.
I think this game has legs though, there are still a lot of people interested in the game who aren't yet sold on the Xbox One yet.
