Like i said, Holiday 2016 is a very, very likely release window for 3DS successor (5.75 years).
3DS in 2014 sold roughly 3.1 million in Japan, this year is currently down 10%, even if that slips down to 20% than 3DS will likely sell 2.5 million in Japan this year. They can afford to just left it scrape along in the first few quarters of 2016 while they build hype for the successor over the holidays.
