The mainstream market isn't anti-Nintendo, the WiiU just isn't a particularly appealing product to many (which in turn impacts the sales of its games). The 3DS should be proof of that. When Nintendo offers what the market (or at least a decent chunk of it) wants, their consoles sell well. When they don't, they sell poorly.

The Wii U is basically a superior 3DS, it's all in the perception.

It's not a matter of relatives between the WiiU and 3DS, it's how much they appeal to their respective market. In the same way the Vita only appeals to specific people (due to the 3DS getting the brunt of support), the WiiU lacks the 3rd party support needed to be competitive in the general market.

Without that support (which makes up the overwhelming majority of releases), and without a secondary feature to sell on (as the Wii did), you're pretty much stuffed.
