Can Nintendo even realistically support a PS4 level hardware ... while still making seperate Vita+ level handheld games and smartphone games?

IMO the answer is a resounding NO to begin with.

They can't even deliver an HD Zelda in under 4 years of development.

How the fuck is the next super-duper Zelda PS4-level gonna work under this Nintendo fan fantasy? 7-8 year dev cycle?

People are not happy with the Wii U/3DS release schedules as is.

Like I said unless Nintendo wants to hire 2000 new people (which they will never do) Fusion may be less a choice and more of the only viable way Nintendo can have multiple hardware models going forward, unless you want zero improvement in visual/design fidelity.

I think this is what they will need to do. At least work closer with smaller 3rd party studios in the west that have got HD experience.  The reason why I think that is because they will get further and further behind the competition and will become a nastalgia box for gamers who like Nintendo games. that audience will continue to shrink every generation.

For starters I think they coudl work with a engine developer to help them come up with a auto scalable engine that will work on both systems. Crytek may be a good choice for that as they are desperate for work atm and their engine isn't too bad, so I am sure they would be happy to make a new one, or even guys makign the unity engine.

The problem is NIntendo are too stubborn to try that so I think your vision of fusion will be the only viable option.  I just wish their fusion was a bit more powerful.
