I agree with you. Price is king. Nintendo have been perceived to be overcharging since the machine came out. The problem they've got is that the pad is so much of the unit price that there's very little they can do to reduce in a meaningful way without taking a huge hit.
I still think they should change their strategy, remove the game pad and replace it with a much cheaper Wiimote/Nunchuck (or even the pro controller) and start selling the pad as an accessory with games like Nintendoland and the games that best utilise the pad bundled in to add value for whatever the pad itself costs to manufacture + a bit of margin.
