I think for Nintendo to truly 'leave the Wii U to die' they would have to be releasing broken game after broken game just to make a quick buck. They would have to release a bad Zelda game this year just to ensure that Wii U sales aren't completely in the toilet. They wouldn't be making Splatoon or Xenoblade Chronicles X, but rather countless Mario and Zelda spinoffs, so every title is a guaranteed million seller.
That, to me, would be leaving the Wii U to die. Just my opinion, of course.
