I would argue mass banning policies are largely ineffective, and usually antagonize many in the noob community. They do tend to move in packs, and the do seem to communicate with internet pheromones. So when you swat one down the group becomes agitated. Smack five or six down they go into a killing frenzy, and they send out support lines to other colonies. So simply forum maintenance on a forum with no real protection results in constant attacks from mass account creation.

I would agree there is a problem. I am not sure it requires drastic action. I have always been a strong advocate for deferred membership. Locking new accounts for a period of time no less then a week. That would form a protective barrier against spammers, and block those with poor impulse control from joining as we have seen clearly illustrated with the original poster which would have been blocked were that the case.
