If Wii U released in 2011, even w/o the gamepad, it would have done much better... but the wait until 2012 let the Wii brand die completely. This hurt many 3rd party games that would have been on the console otherwise, esp. a GTA V launch alongside the PS360 versions. Also, had it launched in 2011, it would have allowed a better transition to NX in 2016 (if that move was necessary) rather than almost being forced to rush their next product. The mobile deal now gives Ninty more breathing room, but Pachter and other journalists turned out to be right that Wii U was launched too late.
