Although Sony doesn't care very much about it, it has no reason at all to discontinue it: its HW is by now dirt cheap to build, it sells games, it occupies a niche that, with Ninty so strong on portables, Sony couldn't ever get back if it abandons it and later changes its mind. Sony isn't anymore as big as it used to be, so even selling just 1M HW units/year, but with the SW and royalties profits added, plus some small benefit from the PS4/PSV cross-play, while requiring few resources to stay afloat at this level, would still be a small niche to be kept. Nobody would take it over at an interesting price,anyway, so the only alternative to keeping it is ditching it, this will happen only when profit won't justify anymore even the few resources required for its minimum possible production numbers.
