There are some snags in the industry right now that aren't all the greatest. The trickle of great titles is a little slow but hasn't it always been?
The software environment is a lot different than it used to be. Today we have a huge flood of mobile games out there and with strong digital networks we have a good deal of smaller titles. These all have drastically shorter development times and cost much less than a standard counterpart, not necessarily even AAA. These games are fast to market and cost a lot less. In past generations we have seen inflation affect the price of games, in the US it seems that inflation doesn't exist anymore and full price is a locked in $60. This makes no sense but when you have to compete with indies and mobile games for $1-$20, no publisher wants to deal with the potential backlash. So they've been steadily increasing route of revenue through DLC. micro-transactions, ports, and remasters as a way to have their cake and eat it too. AAA titles are very expensive to make and they don't want to take chances.
We also haven't had the greatest economy lately and the minimum wage is a sad stagnant consta-broke that hasn't kept up with inflation at all. No one has the discretionary money to support where the industry should have gone so the industry is nickle and diming us.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
