Iwata does give the impression that he wants to distance Nintendo as far away from Sony and Microsoft as possible. Quotes include: -"Since former President Yamauchi passed away, I have been considering what he taught us in the end, and his words that the worst thing we can do in entertainment is to follow what others are doing spoke directly to my heart." -"Following and imitating others is the kind of reasoning that Nintendo tries to avoid the most" -"............employing the same methodology as the other manufacturers would only lead to the most simplistic competitive approaches, such as price wars or money-giving that would never end. We would like to take a unique approach of our own." **Quotes taken from talk about Nintendo's relationship with 3rd party developers. Circa March 2014** I'll add my own thoughts to this in an edit later, perhaps |
Add this one to the pile:

"If you do the same thing as others, it will wear you out. Nintendo is not good at competing so we always have to challenge [the status quo] by making something new, rather than competing in an existing market." - Iwata
This one is from just a couple of days ago (so it doesn't get any more recent than this):

"Indeed, the late Mr. Yamauchi, former president of Nintendo, often told us that in the world of entertainment we have to do things differently than others. That philosophy has been passed down to us. For us to be able to do something unique that is different from others, being able to design the hardware in order to create unique software experiences gives us the best option." - Iwata
I mean I get it, Nintendo fans on the internet want a certain type of console with a glorious return to third party content + Nintendo games, but at some point this is like watching a guy who gets repeatedly told by a girl he's interested in that she's a lesbian ... but still thinks he has a shot with her. Nintendo fans are interested in a mano-e-mano competetion with MS and Sony ... but Nintendo isn't.
