How can there be so much truth to this statement and people will still come in to refute it? Oh yeah, because opinions=facts these days if enough people agree. Once, I wanted to play Ultima 8. It was such a cool game that my roommate had on his PC. When I tried to install it it made me do things like create a boot disk, and who knows what else. I never did; I never played. A console, particularly the ones I grew up with, wouldn't make me do this. It's plug and play. Simple. |
Plug and play... yup. That about sums it up and it's a phrase that should be used going forward when trying to describe what consoles should be about. Right now, we are so far away from plug and play that it's more like plug, create user, insert game, install game, install update for game, play game.
I think the moment I realized shit just got real was when I bought an Xbox One (briefly). I took the console home, unpacked it, hooked it up, booted it on and logged into my XBL account. From there, all I should have had to do was put my copy of GTA 5 in and play but NO. I had to sit there, watching this damn thing install forever. Then, on top of that, I had to install a massive update. By the time I could actually play the game, 40-50 minutes had past. And don't even get me started on the Master Chief Collection voucher. I ended up taking the entire system back three days later and not even getting to PLAY that game because it wasn't finished downloading lol.
I don't know if people are putting up with this stuff because they have no choice, or if they're just stupid. But I hope they stop because as long as sales are brisk, it's only going to get worse.
