Down tiger, I'm on your side here, and you'll notice that I did think Seven changed the gameplay. My problem is that I just don't feel that it was in a direction that is for me. I, and many others, feel that way is that we think better graphics, CG sequences, and all the other things that Final Fantasy VII introduced into the RPG genre are nothing more than tools to tell a story. The problem is that Squaresoft began to focus more on using these tools for their own sake, rather than to improve their method of storytelling. I'll be the first to tell you that seeing some of the sequences blew me away visually. But by the end of the story, I personally didn't care about the characters, the world, or anything else, and I blame much of that on Squaresoft's focusing its energy on the icing, while neglecting the cake. Had they used their new graphical prowess to tell a story of Chrono Trigger's quality, I would have been estatic. In fact, I rather enjoyed Final Fantasy Nine, because it was a step in precisely that direction. But none of the other Fantasy games after VII captured that magic for me. I realize, of course, that not everyone feels this way, and that quite a few of you could relate to that game better than I did. That's fair enough. But when it comes to my own individual opinion, VII and its ilk just didn't do it for me. If you liked it, then more power to you, especially since Square-Enix is favoring your side of the equation. But I'm afraid that I, personally, hopped off the bandwagon at that point. Sorry if that offends you in some way. But we are getting WAY off-topic here, so if you'd like to continue this discussion, feel free to send me a private message (along with instructions on how to use the system; I'm rather new at this...) |
I actually found SNES graphics superior to FF7's graphics as a whole. I'd much rather look at FF6's sprites then FF7's ugly polygons. Honestly i'd rather look at FF1's sprites. FF7 was a case of them going 3-D one game too soon.
