I think their point is that even though you're not from NA (neither am I), NA and Japan is where the modern, global industry originated and thus it affected all of us. I sometimes get tired of hearing over and over about how Nintendo deserves this and that because "they saved the industry in the 80's" but they still did and it still helps both you and me as gamers today, even though we live in different parts of the world.
It's kind of like saying; "Well, I'm not from France, so Penicillin doesn't really help me."
