So clearly going to the playstation is not the issue.
To me, the game fades because you can't skip the slow parts, once you've seen them a half dozen times, which is a problem with most RPGs, though. And a lot of games. This is why the skip option is nice.
As for revolutionary, no the game was not. Nor did it need to be. JRPG gameplay was almost unknown in the west, so it was good that some game made western audiences notice.
The revolutionary part was the presentation.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
