What a terrible article, if you can even call it that. "The GameCube was just a colossal disappointment, especially compared with the beast that was the PlayStation 2. I knew the Wii was a gimmick and I knew the Wii U was an extension of the aforesaid gimmick and destined to fail" If the Gamecube was a colossal disappointment to him, he likely was never a fan of Nintendo, or of gaming in general. The Gamecube was the best console Nintendo has made since the SNES, the last console they were willing to take risks with the games they made. All the radical changes to their IPs like Mario Sunshine, Zelda Windwaker, Metroid, giving out F-Zero to Sega, Luigi's Mansion, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, reviving old IPs like Wave Race and 1080 Snowboard etc. New IPs like Pikmin etc. Even the 3rd party exclusives like Billy Hatcher, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Viewtiful Joe, Baten Kaitos were crazy and unique. The best games of many of their IPs are still from the Gamecube. Ever since Gamecube they've been risk averse. The Gamecube had identity, wide variety of games to call it's own, the Wii and Wii U lack that excitement, they are just boring to me. Whenever I think about them the first thoughts that come up is a concentrated group of core franchises. |
The concept behind the Gamecube was solid, but the hardware and support just wasn't there.
