Are they making apps for everyday use, non-game use or mobile games? As far as I can see, Nintendo are now making new games for smartphones.

Bingo. New games.

"Bringing their games" on the other hand implies putting their full retail releases on smartphones. They've said they're not going to do that. We won't be able to play Mario Kart 7 or Pokemon X/Y on an iPhone.
