Why would Sega make another M+S game right now? It's still selling. As it still sells, its basically free money. If they made another, they would probably stop sales of this one for another game that might not have legs of titanium. What Sega will probably do, is take this money and put it into Samba di Amigo, or NiGHTS, or Valkyria Chronicles, or Iron Man, or Sonic Unleashed... (etc.)

When you have a game with legs like this, you don't rush the sequel. You let it keep selling as long as you can, and puta sequel on the back-burner with a budget reserved, and just keep letting it print money. Especially if you have other monetizable assets to develop in the meantime.

 The 2010 Winter Olympics happen in Feb of 2010 so maybe Sega will release Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics in Sep of 2009.  I see it having slightly better graphics, 2 additional characters, winter sports, a return of dream sports but with them also allowing balance board support, and maybe online (but likely not, knowing Sega).
