Think about it. XChronicles took some 3-4 years to make, yes? And we'll be expecting the new Nintendo system to be available in probably early 2017.. These big games releasing on the "failed" Wii U will be saying like it's not worth putting in so much effort to make XChron and Zelda Unknown for anything past the Wii U's product life-cycle.
The new system HAS to be backward compatible, especially since we're going to see bigger games coming to the system in the years to come (hopefully).
I think it really depends on what software we'll be seeing towards 2016 that REALLY makes the decision of backwards capatability.
This year's E3 should decide that factor.
