I too thought about Nintendo when today I first read the news about Crytek. And although it might be a long shot, I gotta admit your theory holds its own. It actually makes sense.

Don't understand why people say "why would Nintendo acquire graphic whores Crytek", people should remember that until last gen Nintendo machines were usually the powerfullest machines in their generation: N64 more powerful than PS1 and Sega Saturn, Gamecube more powerful than Xbox and PS2, SNES i don't know but at least as powerful as Sega's Mega Drive. Exception are Wii, which was considerably weaker than PS3 and X360, and WiiU which is actually still a pretty powerful machine.
Even if they don't have the best machines, Nintendo usually makes beautiful games with the hardware at their disposal, which is pretty much what Crytek does (although they need to work a lot more on the gameplay of games lol).

Nintendo used to be on the top of the spear of gaming tecnology up until Iwata assumed command, where they started producing "gimmicky" consoles. Incredible success the 1st time (Wii), not so much the 2nd time (WiiU). This time around they don't even have 1s party support and have no western devs with them.

This acquisition would also fit the "3rd parties not with us? We need games, so we'll just fund those games ourselves, particularly looking for financially troubled developers" thing Nintendo has got going on recently.

Most people say they want to Nintendo leave the so-called casual market. In my opinion a move like acquiring a dev with their own powerful engine, focusing on "westerny" games, would fit that bill.

I'm not saying I myself wouldn't be suprised if it were true, but if Nintendo's strategy actually was headed to a diferentt direction from the Wii era, your theory would actually make a lot of sense.
