So what? If basic gameplay being the same was the key ingredient to something being a mainline entry in a series or a spin off then would that make Halo ODST or Gears of War Judgement mainline games in their franchises? Does that make other turn based JRPGs mainline FF games? Is Fallout 3 a mainline Elder Scrolls game?

There is no such thing as a mainline FF game. There's the ones with big production values and budgets that get a number because....well that's just what they do to get more attention, and then there's the smaller ones that don't get a number cus they're not big time enough. None of them have any meaningful connection to one another
