I don't know, I've had 4-man matches that aren't quite that bad, and up to 3-man is perfect most of the time too.

Could it be distance?

Yeah 3 man brawls was bearable, but once a fourth player joined it was awful.
At first I thought it was the nintendo servers acting up, but that was disproved when Tao joined.
