Nintendo has developed/published a pretty decent amount of new ip this gen, Steel Diver, Wonderful 101, Dillon's Rolling Western, Pushmo/Crashmo, Splatoon, Codename S.T.E.A.M, Devil's Third, among other and revived some old series like Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, Pilotwings, Star Fox but it would be nice to see more of this and really push some new ip, many of those listed titles flew under the radar because Nintendo didn't advertise/market them like they should have. I also agree that Nintendo relies on certain franchises like Mario/Pokemon/Zelda too much which gives them too many entries, about 1/3 of the list in the OP belong to these 3 franchises either in mainline entries, remakes or spinoffs. Mario/Pokemon don't need 10 spinoff series and Zelda doesn't need 3 remakes per generation. Cut down on these franchises a bit and let new ones share the spotlight. |
It's true that Nintendo brought new franchises - either publishing or developing them.
But when you look at them you see that they were titles that were meant to be small (pushmo, Dillon's RW, SteelDiver) or not the type of games most consumers are interested in anyway (W101, B2).
I don't know if Steam, Splatoon and Devil's Third will be big. Most likely, only Splatoon will.
What Nintendo needs - and the consumers have shown that - is sports titles (not Mario spinoffs), shooters, open world games, adventure games, RPGs.
In those categories, Nintendo is seriously lacking. One or two games in those genres in 3 years is not enough.
That's why i said above that Nintendo needs new heavyweights - and they will only get them if they invest in those genres that the majority of consumers seem to love.
