But they'd need more diversity than that. But since they don't have to make 2 Smash Brothers, 2 Mario Karts, 2 Mario 3Ds, 2 Mario 2Ds, etc. per generation ... they could free up teams to work on new ideas/concepts too.

Basically this. All those crazy ideas that sometime they implement in their established ip's can fit in new ip's.
