But not only do I not think they can do that but I also feel it would do more damage to their brand than riding this gen out and that they also wont get third party support. cause then they will be making a proper 8th gen console to compete with consoles that would already have a 50M+ lead on them. Not a single third party dev will give them a second look. |
2016 is a terrible date. PS4 and X1 will get a lot of software in 2015 and 2016 will probably be their hottest year, maybe even their peak. A new console would be crushed by that: people won't be ready to upgrade from their previous consoles after 3 years. Just making people upgrade from Wii U isn't enough since it won't do more thna 20M lifetime, so it's a tiny share.
Releasing so early would create a Dreamcast. Sega launched a console that collided with a PS1 that had a lot of games and had amazing releases in 98/99/2000. When the PS2 arrived, just its hype killed the DC. That's what Nintendo would end up. Releasing a console that would flop even harder and then get a killing blow with the next Sony/MS devices and ending up out of the race in another gen.
They screwed their release pipeline with the Wii. Weak hardware, weak legs. The Wii U made things worse. They have to fix their schedule and align with the launch of PS5/Xnext. The best strategy is to hold up this gen and get the next one right.
