Depended what you class as open world. What I typically think of as open world games (the GTA's, Skyrims, Fallout 3's etc) tend to be very hyped, and sometimes well received, but they're never my favorite kind of game and normally, for me, disappointing.
I think one reason is they tend to fail at exploration. Exploration is one of the things which they often promise (or at least suggest) they'll be great at. But gameplay can consist of following waypoints and take a slightly different routes through an ally to find an incidental secret that make little impact on the game. Compare that to the secrets you find in Zelda, Deus ex, Quake 1, Mario 64 and countless other, often old, games.
Engaging and meaningful exploration is out of fashion in third party games and have been for awhile. Despite offering vast open areas, modern open world games do not fix this.
If you class something like a 3D Zelda as open world, which has a more contrived experience (and I don't mean contrived in a negative sense) then I love open world games. Deus ex isn't open world but one of it's strengths was its large open levels.
