Wii U is suppose to be on par with PS3/360 (if not better), so I don't think those character designs in the OT looked like on the same/or better level then last gen graphics

Wii U(2012) 8th gen is far superior to the PS3/360 (2006) 7th gen. The Ps3 and 360 struggled alone at 720p and bad frame rates, the wii is pumping out 1080p at 60fps, the gpu is far superior.

While the Espresso CPU has a mix of strengths and weaknesses, the Latte graphics chip in the Wii U tends to outclass both the GPU's featured in the 360 and PS3.  The advantages can be listed off as follows:

  1. Latte runs at 550MHz, vs. 500MHz in the 360 and PS3 GPUs.
  2. Latte features 32MB of embedded memory on-chip, vs. 10MB on the 360 GPU and no memory at all on the PS3 GPU.
  3. Like the 360, Wii U utilizes a unified shader architecture (more flexible than the static design found in the PS3), and even has more shader variants than the 360 (geometry, pixel, and vertex shader pipelines supported).
  4. Latte functions as a GPGPU, meaning it can assist the CPU in general processing.
  5. Latte reportedly supports the directX 10.1 API, while the 360 and PS3 do not support above directX 9.

Ultimately, it's hard to argue that the Latte is in any way inferior to the competition's graphics chips, and it should be noted that it's based are 2-3 generations ahead of the chips used for the 360 and PS3.
