Just going to correct one thing, Smash did not blow past Galaxy, they have sold roughly the same amount with Smash slightly higher. Ur point still stands, just figured I would correct that part.
One more thing actually, 2D Mario has traditionally sold better than 3D Mario but there was only one generation previous to this where they both were available, the Wii/DS era. U compare Mario 64 DS/Mario Galaxy to NSMB/NSMB Wii and yes 2D outsold them by a large margin but at the same time Wii/DS were very family/casual driven, which u have pointed out on numerous occasions in the past, and the 2D style suits that demographic better. Also NSMB was the first original 2D Mario in 14 years and the Wii version was the first console 2D Mario in 18 years and the first to add multiplayer, those facts alone made them seem like a huge deal. The 3DS/Wii U versions didn't add anything remarkable and thus are just standard sequels which doesn't make them as big of a deal. What I'm getting at is without a huge casual audience and rediculous amounts of nostalgia due to long stretch between releases, I believe 2D & 3D Mario are roughly the same in terms of popularity. Compare the two series on 3DS & Wii U and u will see roughly similar numbers for each series.

fair enough.
But not really. NSMBWiiU still sold a LOT of copies for a system that isnt selling to the casual. Same with the 3ds one to a lesser extent. So no the popularity isnt the same. As it seems 3d Mario could cap at 8 mil? where the 2d ones go higher. Unti i see the 3d one outsell a 2d one im sticking to my point
