It would've helped, but ultimately I think Nintendo's bigger problem is all the Mario/Mario Kart/Smash/Zelda/etc. in the world only gets you to about 20 million users.

Spin it, slice it, dice it, however you want that's the problem.

If you want more than that you either need to be competitive with people who aren't Nintendo fans (read: people who buy a PS4/X1 for Grand Theft Auto, Skyrim, Madden NFL, Call of Duty, etc. and don't give two craps about Smash Brothers) or find some other gimmick/fad audience to piggyback off of (like the first Wii did).

Unfortunately for Nintendo, neither of the above options are very easy to get, especially since smart devices have upstaged home devices like Wii and Kinect by a factor of 10.

Gaming enthusiasts won't buy a console that's not technically on par with the current generation as their primary gaming console. So that would've doomed Wii U no matter what.
