Taking inspiration from something isn't the same as imitating something. Games shouldn't try to be movies. You don't see movies trying to be books or something like that. What you wanna do is take your inspiration, or source material if you're making a direct adaptation of something, and think about the best possible way you can translate that into your medium of choice. So if a developer watches a movie and thinks to himself "wow that was awesome, I wonder if I could turn some of those ideas into a game?" That's totally fine. But whatever he makes shouldn't be structured like a movie, just like a movie isn't structured like a book, and a book isn't structured like a comic, etc.....
