8 months?  Maybe Sony's manufacturing costs had simply gone down that's not exactly a knee-jerk reaction.

Sony made all of their price cuts for the PS2 in the U.S. after the end of the fiscal year for reporting reasons.  All of the PS2 cuts in the U.S. were made a short time after the end of the FY in March.  

But the price cuts were like a game of tit for tat (or equivalent retaliation) that all 3 console makers were taking turns instigating.
