when nintendo acquired monolith i thought they were interested in creating something very storyheavy like xenogears and xenosaga were. but with xenoblade it was pretty clear it's going the open world and simplified story direction.

I expect Xenoblade Chronicles X to have a more complex story than Xenoblade (centered around Elma as the main protagonist.) I don't expect Xenogears level of detail or convolusion, but it should definitely be a multidimensional story, with both a complex enough meta-plot as well as interesting sub-plots and characters. I wouldn't exactly call Xenoblade's story simple in the context of all RPG's, either. We'll have to wait and see.

it's always a question of what you're comparing it to:

compared to the average story we've seen in rpgs so far... yes, you're right.

compared to what xenogears and xenosaga trilogy were... no.

Yes, in the case of Xenosaga it was a disadvantage, however. The story required many more episodes to fully flesh it out and feel contained (hence Perfect Works is required to fill in the blanks), and Episode III felt rushed because of this. With Xenoblade, I have a feeling Monolith Soft was trying to make a self-contained story more than anything else. Now that they know Nintendo will give them the budget and time they need, they will probably try more ambitious stuff that has loose ends for sequels.
