It would have been dead on arrival. The Wii was a success because it used the motion controlls at the right price and the exact time when it could be the most popular. The Gamepad not only wouldn't have attracted the masses as the Wii did, it would have doomed the console to be around 700€ permanently.
Just compare Wii Sports and NintendoLand. Which one is more attractive as a launch game for a wider audience? The one everyone instantly knows how to play or the one that makes a lot of references to franchises the common masses won't recognise?
